This meter shows the sound-energy driver, not measured oxidative stress. The logarithmic scale keeps both quieter and louder examples readable.

A few decibels make a big difference.

Every 3 dBA increase halves the recommended exposure time. Turn it down, step away or use hearing protection. Soundbites does not make loud sound safe.

How to read these measures

The time guide uses NIOSH’s occupational reference of 85 dBA for 8 hours and a 3 dB exchange rate. It is not a universal safe threshold: individual sensitivity and exposure across the day matter. Below 85 dBA we show no countdown; above 115 dBA we do not extrapolate a time allowance.

Sound intensity rises tenfold with each 10 dB increase. The second meter uses a labelled logarithmic scale for that energy relationship as an illustration of the increasing challenge to inner ear cells. It does not calculate reactive oxygen species, personal damage or a treatment effect.
